The environmental department of Loviisan kaupunki (Loviisa city) administration is the local environment protection authority responsible of the region of Loviisa city and municipality of Lapinjärvi. Protection of water bodies and preventive actions against pollution and eutrophication are important for the city and region situated by the coast. The agriculture and other activities in the area have significant impact on the waters (sea, rivers and lakes). Loviisanjoki is a small river with a catchment area of about 110 km2 on the territory of Loviisa and Lapinlahti municipalities. The river flows to Gulf of Finland at the bay Loviisanlahti, which is rather shallow and eutrophicated. Loviisanlahti is located in the center of Loviisa city and therefore important for recreation for local people and for tourists. All efforts to minimize nutrient flow into Loviisanlahti and further to the Baltic Sea are important and the core tasks of the environmental department of Loviisan kaupunki.
